About Curome

The Curome Cox Foundation strives to promote strength of family relationships as well as individual growth for youth in low socioeconomic communities.

Curome serves as a prime example, that dreams can be achieved despite difficult circumstances. Curome has himself endured a life filled with turmoil and instability. His father moved from one place to another during Curome’s childhood. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol which caused his death in a New York shelter in 1985. Curome’s life continued to be difficult as he and his four siblings tried to remain with his mother who was also battling with drug addiction. Her drug addiction also caused her to be out of Curome’s life for many years. Curome knows first hand what it means to be hungry, homeless, and powerless, but he was never hopeless. This is the fuel that drives Curome’s passion for children. Curome’s desire to use his personal success aids in his ability to reach out to youth, teaching them the importance of personal growth and education despite life circumstances.

Curome’s journey began in his birthplace of Harlem, New York City where he lived until age seven. With Curome’s unstable life he was moved to Arlington, Virginia with close family friends who agreed to care for him. The following years were not easy without his mom or dad, but with the help of a strong support system Curome continued to excel in school. Notably, he attended Gonzaga College High School where he began playing football. Curome went on to become an All Metropolitan and the All American selection as cornerback and wide receiver. His dreams came true when he accepted a full four year scholarship to the University of Maryland. He finished his collegiate career with three consecutive ten plus win seasons capped off with Big Bowl game victories. Curome graduated from UM with an undergraduate degree in family studies.

Post graduation from University of Maryland, Curome began his NFL career with the Denver Broncos and since then he has worked diligently to improve each season. Due to his determination and focus to achieve higher levels of performance he has continued to gain the attention of his football colleagues.

The future for this young, educated athlete is bright. He is putting his money where his heart is. In the summer of 2007, The Curome Cox Foundation (CCF) will host its first annual free football clinic for youth of all ages. The foundation will focus its resources geographically on the Northern Virginia area initially. This free clinic is aimed at providing mentorship to youth while providing an opportunity to work on individual athletic skills, sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork. Curome will also be teaming up with Arlington County to provide a variety of community outreach projects to benefit children in underserved communities. In addition, CCF will host a Kids Day to get kids outside and active. This day will foster both interaction and unity between the kids and parents while fostering personal growth and awareness.

The Curome Cox Foundation is also looking forward to working in conjunction with the Arlington County Public School system to enhance its focus on supporting the realization and significance of post-high school education through mentoring. Together, CCF and ACPS will create and implement an incentive based program that rewards children for making positive choices that lead to a bright future.

Curome is looking forward to living his lifelong commitment to supporting youth. He says “My dream is to see children succeed in life despite their race, socioeconomic status or domestic problems”. Curome’s favorite bible verse (Luke 12:48) continues to resonate in his spirit as he strives to make the world a better place.
